CIMBS™ is a multidimensional approach to therapy. Each of the therapeutic dimensions that we focus on in our weekend training courses has value for its own sake, and could be included in your usual approach to patients. What you have learned in the course that weekend is part of one dimension.
CIMBS™ can be very activating and stimulating. For some patients it can feel disorienting. Therefore we suggest you introduce your new learnings with your patients who are quite stable, and whom you know relatively well. We suggest that you alert your patients that you will be trying something different with them and that you would like to review their experience at the end of the session. They will help supervise and encourage you in adapting your new learning into your psychotherapy practice. We strongly discourage trainees from practicing CIMBS™ with their patients/clients with dissociative identity disorder, borderline personality disorders, active chemical dependency disorders, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder and those with high anxiety and dissociate traits. CIMBS™ is very activating, can bring too much anxiety into the system
When you take a course we hope that you ‘get it’ experientially to understand yourself more clearly, and be able to have a deeper appreciation of your patients. What you learned in this course is limited by our teaching skills, our therapy process and by the limitations of learning something new and unfamiliar. If you took the course again in 6 weeks, you would get something different or new. Because this paradigm is quite different from what most of us learned in our training as psychotherapists it takes quite a lot of exposure and repetition to learn something very new and often counterintuitive.
CIMBS™ is not magic although with some patients it can be quite transformative in a very short time [10 minutes]. Some patients change quite slowly due to many factors such as severity and very early developmental trauma [before 18 months], genetic and temperamental factors, obsessive compulsive disorders, multiple coexisting mental disorders, brain injuries, medical conditions, high levels of unconscious anxiety, severe unconscious shame patterns, and so on.
In order to practice CIMBS™ you need to be versed in all the therapeutic perspectives and be familiar with Multiple Brain Systems and neurophysiopsychotherapy.
You are not really practicing ‘CIMBS™’ until you have attended at least 6 training courses and have been in a training group for a couple of years. This is very important that you do not claim that you are practicing CIMBS™ unless you already have had the necessary training.
We have a certification process if you want to be a Certified CIMBS™ therapist, during which your work with be evaluated and your depth of understanding of the CIMBS™ paradigm will be tested.
Client Brochures are now available for current CIMBS trainees, which describe the CIMBS approach and benefits of this way of working. See your training group leader to receive brochures.
